About SCOS
An HKUST spin-out building the fast optical modulators that photonics needs.
SmartChip Optoelectronic Semiconductor Ltd (SCOS) is a Hong Kong deep-tech company and a spin-out from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Our founders bring more than 20 years of experience designing high-speed displays and optical elements, and a record of moving laboratory technology into industry.
We develop fast, efficient liquid-crystal optical modulators: LCoS phase modulators for wavelength selective switches, analog FLCoS microdisplays, and a solid-state optical circuit switch built on our own FLC beam-steering technology. We also design and synthesise the liquid-crystal materials behind them.
We have strong, strategic industrial partnerships with leading LCoS and display manufacturers to scale up to mass production.
TeamOur vision
Within the next five years, we aim to become a core component supplier for optical switching (WSS and OCS) in AI infrastructure and telecom networks. By taking liquid-crystal modulators from milliseconds to microseconds, we want optical networks to reconfigure as fast as AI workloads change, while using less energy. We will also bring bright, high-resolution FLCoS microdisplays to next-generation AR/VR glasses and head-up displays, building on a complete chain from our own LC materials to devices and modules, scaled up with our manufacturing partners.
